The Horror Tag

For this Spooky Friday, I’m doing the Horror Tag from Michelle at A Geek Girl’s Guide. Thanks for the fun prompts!

How old were you when you saw your first horror movie?

I guess it depends on what you count as horror. I think Jurassic Park qualifies, so I was probably around 6. I’ve watched it countless times, and it’s still one of my favorite movies today.

What was the first horror movie you saw?

Well, I pretty much answered this in the last question. Oops.

What is your favorite horror movie?

In the past few years I’ve gotten more and more into horror, but Alien, which I saw when I was around 14 or 15, is the movie that always pops into my head when I get asked this question. It’s just the perfect horror movie to me.

Do you prefer gore or thrillers?

Thrillers – gore doesn’t really scare me, it just disgusts me, and I prefer watching/reading horror that scares me.

If you got trapped in one scary movie, which would you choose?

As much as I love Alien, it’s definitely not the one I’d want to be trapped in. Maybe Jaws (ya know, Alien, but in the water)? I could just…stay out of the water? That seems reasonable. You can have a nice relaxing day on the beach staying on the sand, just dipping your toes in the water.

If you were in a horror movie, would you be the final girl, the first to die, the comic relief, the smart one, or the killer?

I actually took a “What Horror Character Trope Are You?” quiz once, and I got final girl! Though I’d like to think that I’d be the final girl because I’m also ‘the smart one,’ like Ripley in Alien.

While watching a horror movie, are you the person who yells at the characters, the person covering their eyes the whole time, or the person who falls asleep?

I am the person narrating what’s goings on in the movie to the people covering their eyes the whole time.

Have you ever played a horror game? What is your favorite horror game?

I’m more into watching other people play video games than playing, especially first person horror (I get too scared), but I’ve played a few. The Last of Us is about as scary as I can get, and there was a moment in the sequel where I was so scared I had to stop playing for a few minutes. I love watching people play the Resident Evil games and Alien: Isolation. I played Yomawari last year which is based on a lot of Japanese folk lore, and I’m really into folk lore-based games. It does a great job of setting up a terrifying atmosphere without relying too much on jump scares.

If you got trapped in one horror game, what would you want it to be?

Hmm. Ooh I know. Death Trips, the shortest horror game ever. Go watch a let’s play of it.

And I’ve added an extra question that I’d love to hear others’ responses to – What upcoming horror game(s) are you looking forward to?

I’ve become interested in 2D horror games lately, so I’m definitely on the lookout for those. Zelter (pictured left) is a 2d zombie apocalypse survival game that releases next week, and Lamentum (pictured right) is a survival horror game set in mid 19th century New England set to release in 2021.

Here are the prompts if you want to do this tag yourself:

  1. I was looking at Yomawari on Steam a few weeks ago. I had never heard of it before and it sounded interesting. I usually prefer more “atmospheric terror” than just jump scares or getting chased by things. Didn’t even think to pick Jaws for which movie I’d wanna be trapped in….

  2. I played Yomawari a few years ago as the folklore interested me initially. I actually didn’t like the game much at the time as the random insta deaths really irritated me, but I still find myself thinking about it a lot. I think I should play the 2nd game next Hallowe’en, maybe.

I love the addition of the last question! Lamentum looks really interesting but I’d advise against playing the demo if you haven’t already (it was extremely dull and barely showed anything) – just wait for the game to actually come out!
