Favorite Flying Type Pokémon

It used to be practically a necessity to have a flying type on your team – you needed one if you wanted to be able to use HM02 (fly) to get around quickly. But Gen 7 got rid of HMs and introduced methods like pokéride to get around without them. So flying types aren’t quite as necessary, and I wonder how that’s changed people’s teams.

Fun fact: there are only 3 pure flying type pokémon. Most of the ones we think of as flying type are normal/flying. Which brings me to an important point – because of dual typing, some of my favorite pokémon might not appear on a post because I’ve decided to include them with a different type – just because a flying type doesn’t appear here doesn’t mean it won’t appear in another post. With that note, here are my favorite flying types!

Gen 1 – Kanto – Pidgeotto

My Gen 1 team was the same as Ash’s original team. I had pikachu, bulbasaur, squirtle, charmander, butterfree, and pidgey. While I many not have included pidgeotto on my let’s go team, I will always have a special place in my heart for it.

Gen 2 – Johto – Noctowl

Owls are so cool, so I love this Gen 2 pokémon. I can’t remember if I used noctowl on my team – I really need to get out some of the pokémon games I haven’t played in awhile and see what I’ve got.

Gen 3 – Hoenn – Altaria

This was a tough pick because I’m very fond of taillow and swellow. But I adore altaria’s design, with its sky blue color and fluffy cloud wings, it just looks like a chunk of the sky became a pokémon.

Gen 4 – Sinnoh – Staraptor

Staraptor was one of the flying types that made it on my team by necessity and I don’t know if it will be on my team when we get Gen 4 remakes (you need quite a lot of HMs in Sinnoh and I hope they aren’t necessary in the remakes).

Gen 5 – Unova – Archeops

It’s a super colorful fossil bird. What more do I need to say?

Gen 6 – Kalos – Fletchling

I love that fletchling becomes a fire/flying type when it evolves. Fire is one of my favorite types and its rare that you get a fire type so early in the game unless you choose the fire starter. And it’s such a cutie.

Gen 7 – Alola – Minior

I had to pick one flying type that doesn’t look like a bird. I don’t know too much about minior, other than that it’s a meteor pokémon whose diet determines its core color, but I sure would love to see a minior shower.

Gen 8 – Galar – Corviknight

I practically had my Pokémon Shield team picked out before the game even released. I wasn’t expecting to have a flying type on my team, but then I saw corviknight, and corviknight is awesome!

Let me know what your favorite flying type pokémon are!

  1. Corviknight is one of my new favorite flying types. The remember having to trade my Charizard from Pokémon Red to my brother who had Blue just so he could teach it Fly, that way I wouldn’t need to keep a flying type in my lineup just to get around the map. 🙃
