I took a little break from posting this past week, but I’m back with Music Monday! This is kind of a weird 2019 music wrap-up, as I spent a good portion catching up on games after graduating from college. So most of the games I played were pre-2019 releases, but I’d still like to share some 2019 favorites.
I wanted to take a quick moment to recognize the games nominated for best score/music this year at the Game Awards: Death Stranding, Cadence of Hyrule, Devil May Cry 5, Kingdom Hearts 3, and Sayonara Wild Hearts, with Death Stranding taking the win. I’ve only just started playing Death Stranding and Cadence of Hyrule, but I hope to feature them in future posts.
Gris pt. 2 – Gris
While Gris did win the award for Games for Impact, and was nominated for a couple others, it did not receive a nomination for best score/music, though it absolutely deserved it.
Tal Tal Heights – Link’s Awakening
I haven’t played the Link’s Awakening remake yet (I have played the original), but this is one of the most popular tracks not only on its ost, but out of the entire Zelda series. And it sounds fantastic remastered.
Fear of the Unknown – Celeste
This year, we got a free Celeste dlc chapter with a whole new soundtrack (wish it had been recognized at the Game Awards). This track introduces a new instrument for Celeste (a violin!) and a new leitmotif. If anyone wants to know more about how the soundtrack fits into this game, I highly recommend reading composer Lena Raine’s blog post.
Pokémon Sword/Shield – Pokémon’s newest iteration also delivered some great music and I’ve already featured it here.
Don’t Be So Serious – Low Roar – Death Stranding
Okay, I lied, I am gonna include something from Death Stranding, but only because it’s at the very beginning of the game and I’ve been listening to it a lot for the past few days.
Soundtracks I’m looking forward to in 2020
If you’ve been following Music Mondays, you know how much I love The Last of Us’s soundtrack, and how much I’m looking forward to Part 2 and its new soundtrack. I’m also looking forward to the soundtracks for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Littlewood, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and possibly Breath of the Wild 2 (I’m thinking 2021 though). And now I’ll leave one last track for you, another Lena Raine track for Chicory, which is estimated for a 2021 release.
Eyes in the Darkness – Chicory
